Bullied – Book signing
Original report by: Phyllis Schulte, Nar Shaddaa Base
Many of you (especially our female members and fans) might remember a news story of young Katie Goldman. Katie was bullied at school in 2010 because she carried a Star Wars water bottle to school. The males in her class harassed and bullied her stating that “Star Wars was for boys”.
Her mom blogged about this incident – and the story was picked up by local and national news, as well as the Rebel and 501st Legions. Female Star Wars fans all over the world were encouraged to tell Katie that Star Wars was NOT just for boys. In the months following this incident, Katie’s mom started to research bullying as a whole. Her findings and story are now contained within the book “Bullied”. The first signing of this book was August 14 and the author asked for Nar Shaddaa Base and Midwest Garrison to come out in support. Woulf and myself (both members of the MWG and NSB) came out in our Rebel costumes to support this endeavor.
Katie’s mom Carrie surprised us with a check for the American Cancer Society in the amount of $250.00 for coming to support the signing. The book was well received and many copies flew off the shelves last night.
